Why everyone is going wild about the new 'The Lion King' advert

Disney have vowed to remake some of their most-loved, animated classics into live-action CG-‘I can’t believe it’s not real’ movies. You may have seen beloved Dumbo grace the big screen in Autumn, with visuals so intricate, you can even spot the veins pulsing through his giant ears. Disney’s staggering CGI capabilities had already been famed by their remake of The Jungle Book which saw talented young actor Neel Sethi act out almost the entire movie to a giant green screen and a tennis ball on a stick.

Last week, Disney released The Lion King trailer, their latest live-action remake. Showing little visual resemblance to the animated classic, and requiring far less imagination, the creators of the new film have achieved pixellated paradise. So much so, you might question whether the casting directors went to Africa to train lions, apes and warthogs to master 'The Circle of Life'.

These Disney classic makeovers have thrown into light the unprecedented standard of realism which CGI has achieved over the past few years. There is absolutely no doubt that in terms of making The Lion King into a ‘real-life’ movie, Disney have accomplished that through the power of computers (though a lack of training lions to sing is evident).

However, as is often the case, the new The Lion King advert has not dodged criticism for its CGI effects, with some fans arguing that the remake loses the core emotion of the original, which can only be conveyed through animation. The character which comes under most scrutiny is Scar which some fans have stated is less ‘sexy’ in the realistic revamp. Who knew Scar was such a sex symbol?

Whether you’re a CGI fan or not, there’s no denying that Simba’s new mane looks pretty damn huggable. The Lion King will be in cinemas 19th July 2019, on the 25th anniversary of the original classic. Watch the full trailer below.
